We have just renovated and landscaped an old barn and surrounding ground. The ground area was partly earth and the rest farmyard !. The ground was cleared and three areas', approx 15' x 15', were turfed. The arrangement was that top soil and sand was laid first then turf on the stoney, but not solid, areas. The gardeners, who have now gone bust, did not use sand or top soil and the turf is now very poor, despite thorough watering from rainfall, and stones are appearing thro it !. Is it possible to put sand/topsoil onto the existing turf and then re-seed it ?

I agree start again and do it properly or you will never be happy with it.

If you want a proper lawn then go with turf. Seed grown grass will take 2-3 years to fill out and look nice unless you have perfect conditions, which doe snot sound like you do. More expensive but it is worth it.

It was turfed Kildermore. Its the preparation that was not done and seed or turf needs that, as they found out.

I can't see that working, to be honest. I think you might need to remove the poor turf, prepare the ground properly, and then re-seed or re-turf. Sorry, but I do think the hard work involved would be worth it in the long run.
