Mini onion setts

Hello, I planted my onion setts in November last year but they have only grown to the size of small pickling onions (1" to 1 1/2" diameter) and the tops have died off. They were planted between a hedge and a double row of broad beans - would light be a problem? Are these onions any good - will they grow again next year?
Thank you. Phil.

I don't think there's much point in keeping them until next year - they will most likely go to seed then and be no use to you. You should be able to use them now though, if you have the patience!

« re black physalis, hello everyone, i shall post a photo tomorrow.
Hi Phil and welcome to GoY, where do you live in the UK? If it is where the winter was very bad tis would explain the problem with the onions. We always wait until spring to plant onion sets.
