Nelumbo Lutea

I have 2 pots of Nelumbo Lutea growing, both from seed set in spring 2011. One pot has 4 aerial leaves and all look OK, the other looks very poorly. See photos. Both are inside (one in a greenhouse, 1 in a conservsatory) in good light and in water at 25-28C. Any ideas what the leaf problem may be due to, and how to cure it?

I know nowt about these, but is that a heater or an aerator in the photo. Just wondered if the water was lacking due to lack of air, molluscs to clean it or something along those lines (ie, the water is effectively going stagnant).
What water do you use - this may be affecting it.
Just a couple of thoughts..........
