I have pruned (quite severely) my lovely clematis alpina because I needed to panint the pergola with wood preservative.Have I killed it ?! It had finished flowering.

I dont think you will. I pruned mine right to the ground after it finished flowering (14 years old) I got plenty of regrowth but it has taken 2 years to flower again. So I am sure it will recover in time. Yours may even flower next spring fingers crossed.
