i got to say drc726 the ivy in my garden doesnt seam to mindwear it grows weather it be up or across .
as for bying mature plants i wouldnt bother as ivy grows so quickly and you could get a few different veriaties to make it more interesting .

They root fairly reasonably, so as well as buying some, you could get some cuttings from woods and Hedgerows.

i should think when it groows a bit you could take cuttings from that . if you lived closer ive got loads of ivy i dont want lol .

There are some companies on the internet who sell them at 5-6ft tall and one company are offering them reduced by 50% so now £14.98. But I have no idea if their plants are any good you will have to shop around. These are for tying in to structures really and I think you want plants for ground cover?
