Cutting back Chrysanthemums

In my garden I have a few chrysanthemum bushes which I think are 'Red Charm'. Last years flowers and growth is now dead and I have noticed newer green leaves shooting up from the base. Do I cut last year's growth off and when would be the best time to do this?

Yes I agree with Andrea, but in the spring if you have large plants you can propogate by division. In the past I grew charm from seed which made a very good pot plant through the Autumn.

Wait until it warms up a bit and everything has thawed and the threat of frost has passed. The old growth will give a bit of protection to the new shoots appearing at the bottom.
