What sort of grass ?

I have recently planted an orchard of apple trees on a plot of land which slopes down to a stream, The land was a jungle of old Hazel coppice straggy Oaks and thorn. Now with the land cleared we have the inevitable brambles appearing everywhere and I strim them back regularly twice a year but I am thinking it would be nice to have some grass between the trees to green the area up a bit. I am looking for a very tough grass which will spread quickly and does not need much preparation.... any suggestions ?

Sorry to muscle in on your question Nick but may I ask DoctorBob - I need to put grass seed on a large bank which is mainly made up of clay - when do you suggest the grass seed goes down and the best type that will take to clay - and you will know me by now, I would want something to attract the insects!? Do you suggest something like you suggest above.?

Hi Nicklintott,
If you Google Boston Seeds, you will see on the right hand side, Grass. Go into Landscape grass seed, scroll down to BS Ecosward plus low maintenance environmental mix, Clover plus Ryegrass.
This is the one I would use for your purpose. You could add some wild flower seed to give you a regular floral look, to attract bees etc.
I am sure you will get some other suggestions, hope you find the right one for you.
