I have a north facing fence that gets sun from 3.30 till dark. Would a climbing rose be happy here.If so what type would be suitable

Thanks for that, is it best to prepare the soil now(compost,muck etc) and plant in spring or prepare and plant in say November. What do you think

Plan to plant in autumn, it's the best time, but if you want to buy bare root, that'll be more in winter. You can plant in winter as long as the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged, so prepare the area now if you want to, or in September.

Not only the rose but clematis would be an excellent rose companion as it would use the roses stems to climb up.
As for WHICH rose, the choice is SO personal that i would be inclined to do a little research and see which take your fancy.
