Anyone recognise this beast of a plant?! It certainly wasn't planted so must have self seeded.

Good guess Beattie, I thought it could be a Salvia or Lobilea. Hard to tell without a closeup.

The flowers do look like an Atriplex, though.

I think it's an atriplex. There is one called something like A. atrosanguinea which this resembles.
