Sorry folks the photograph was rather hopeless I hope this one comes out a little clearer. The big branch on the left is the one I wish to demolish!

I pruned an old one with my brother. over three years we cut it back hard following RHS advice and it recovered well and is looking good. Avoid any tags/spurs that could let infection in and it should be fine. good luck.

Thanks to one and all, I was a bit worried when I saw other questions answered and not mine, thought you were all afraid to put your head on the block!!!! but I do have young ones coming along from cuttings I have taken, in case of tradgedy, but did not want to loose the big one just yet!! Thanks for your help.

I don't know which species it is as there are several Olearias, but my RHS book says that MOST species tolerate hard pruning and will break from mature wood.
So - you could probably get away with it, Telme!
BUT - please don't blame me if it goes wrong! lol.
