What's a fast growing plant, that can reach 8-9ft in height

We have a clay heavy soil & want a plant/tree, that we can plant round the fences, to shield the garden from passing buses.

Laurel is good for this, as it doesn't mind pollution. I know it's a bit boring, but there's a variegated one and they do flower as a bonus!
