Agree - hard pruning like that needs to be done around June at the latest, immediately after the flowers are finished.

Note that pruning it back to stems more than finger thick means a 20% chance of the whole plant dying.

You will find that calistomen respond well to hard pruning, but i prefer to take on this task once flowering is over.
