I have planted a new clematis today next to an existing one and have unfortunately disturbed some of the existing ones roots, will it be ok?

Sorry to disagree, Bulbaholic, but I lost 'Miss Bateman' because I disturbed her roots. They don't like their roots upset.

Not much you can do about it now anyway - just wait and see if it regrows next year, even if it all disappears this year.

Clematis are thugs, Marion, and it is very unlikely that you have hurt it.
