Rouge Edelweiss, Tall and blocking other plants.

Berkshire, United Kingdom

Help ! I am new to gardening as I have just finished planting up my new garden, planned from scratch. I took time to plan, however I seem to have a rouge Edelweiss. I have planted 5 plants in the front of a bed, as the tag said it would grow to approx 25cm high, however one plant seems to have shot up to approx 50+ cm (see picture).
My question is could I now move this as it is blocking site of a lovely Dahlia behind it, or would I be better just removing it altogether ?
Thankyou

There is no Edelweiis in that picture, I don't know what the plant at the front is, but not edelweiss.

Thanks Bulbaholic, but the plants right at the front, nearest the brick edge are Edelweiss, they have Edelweiss flowers on them and bought from J Parkers so I would hope they know what they are selling.

that aint no edelweiss

I shall stick my neck out here and say the leaves look right for Leontopodium alpinum (Edelweiss) not all are short and grey and they can reach 30cm - 12" if not growing on a mountain side. But this does seem very tall and lush and Rouge means red? Interestingly I looked up J Parker and they dont seem to sell it?

Sorry those are not Leontopodim alpinum! Leaf shape size and colour is totally wrong. Edelweiss have green-grey foliage and does not put up long stems like the plants in the photo. Also only grows to 15cm approx 6 inches. I'd be asking questions from the people I'd bought from - actually it looks like a rampant weed to me :-(

thanks all for you comments, I think maybe I will dig it up tonight and promptly bin it, the others seem ok so I will leave them and see what happens.

Drc726, this was purchased from J Parkers back in April, I have just checked the order and it was definatley from them. Maybe I will email them and see what they say. Right down the bottom of this plant is a little off shoot which definatley looks like Edelweiss, it is silvery green colour.

I can see a white flower in the behind this tall plant. is that the Edelweiss.
Is there another one of these against the fence? It looks a little like purple loosestrife.

Seaburngirl. AHHH I see what you are saying it does look like the one up againt the trellis. That is a Blazing Star (Liatris) which came on a different order from J Parkers. I wonder if there has been a mix up with my planting, strange as they came in completely sperate orders.
Thanks all.
Now my question is can I move this Liatris now or will I have to wait ?

30 Aug, 2011

I'd wait until they have finished flowering personally. they can be lifted backend and re placed then. take as much soil as is practical so as not to damage all the roots.

I can see your edelweiss flower, now, Seaburngirl! It is on the right hand side of the picture and low down.

Firstly I have emailed J Parkers and have asked them what they think, not holding my breath.
On getting home tonight I have done a bit more investigation and tall bit is definatly not a Liatris, so I dug around and it looks like something totally different growing so close to the Edelweiss, so I got the weed dibber out and dug it out. Picture now attached to show these are definatley Edelweiss (pics attached).
Thanks for all your comments.

Yes, Ma, I am now quite happy to recognise these as being edelweiss.

I was looking for something red (= rouge) but I think Rubysmum means ROGUE ;-)

30 Aug, 2011

I think Ruby meant rogue!

That's what I wrote :-? Puzzled now......

30 Aug, 2011

I am baffled now, as the photo has changed?

30 Aug, 2011

Getting a named plant from Parkers isn't unfortunately a guarantee the label is right. My early summer flowering yellow anemones turned out to be late flowering pink ones.
They have agreed to replace, but that's not the point is it?

30 Aug, 2011

Drc the EdelweiƟ was always there obscured by whatever the tall plant (weed?) was that was growing in front of it - SBG spotted it and Rubysmum has now removed the offending plants and taken a photo of the real macoy.

I love this thread...Q how do you get three gardeners to....Lol

lol

Rubysmum, can you put the original photo back, as well as the new one, so that we can see how they compare?

31 Aug, 2011

Yes I got that bit MG, but Ruby'smuim said 'Thanks Bulbaholic, but the plants right at the front, nearest the brick edge are Edelweiss,' and now this is quite a different plant?

31 Aug, 2011

Yup she recognised that the plants right at the front were not EdelweiƟ and has consigned them to the compost if understand correctly :-)

Thanks MG !

Ok, I have now added the first picture back on. Parkers have come back and said the plant (I have now removed) was a Liatris. All verys strange as the Edelweiss were planted in the front of the bed and the Liatris in the rear some 4 weeks later ....... They were growing so close together they must have been planted at the same time, but I just don't know how.
I suppose it will just remain a mystery.

31 Aug, 2011

Thats a shame are you going to try and replant them?

31 Aug, 2011

Oh, now I see what the debate was...Do try and replant the liatris, it is worth a try.

How do I say thanks?
