I have about 12 clematis plants growing in the ground and rambling up the fences in my Garden and the leaves on mine are still a lovely fresh green, I am in Bristol and although it rained a lot here I still watered the garden at least 3 times a week and on hot days every day, also gave them a feed of Tomorite every few weeks, I am quite amazed at some of them actually, as I bought some from the local supermarket last year for £1.79 they did not do much last year but they have gone mad this year and are still flowering now.

Another thought - what variety of clematis is it? And how long have you had it? If its a viticella or jackmanii variety, those that start flowering from July onwards, and you didn't prune it last winter, they usually have lots of stem from the ground up with brown leaves by this time of year. Do not feed at this time of year, by the way.

They don't need much feeding if they're in the ground - a handful of Vitax Q4 or Growmore in April, turned into the soil at the roots, and another application 6 weeks later, and that's it. In pots is different, then they need more food. And I don't recommend tomato food either... sorry Marion, lol!

Mine are now in the same state - I suspect the weather conditions this year have been a large contributary factor to this - we've had lots of wind and lots of cool weather during August. You haven't said whether yours are in pots or in the ground, but water shortage at various times may have been an issue.
