I grew cauliflowers for the first time this year they started great with a two inch floret then went brown and went to seed. what did I do wrong

There are several things that could have gone wrong, Castle:
Did they get at least 6 hours of direct sun a day--on the sunny days, at least?
Did they have a good rich soil with plenty of compost and some lime, to ward off the club root?
Were they spaced properly? Cauliflower plants should be at least 18 inches apart.
Were they well watered during the dry times this summer?
Any lack in these areas would have caused small curds, which would have bolted before you knew that they were as big as they were going to get.
