Hi Carlnoble,
bizzie lizzies, begonia sempervivans both do well in shade. fuchsia perform well in shade and you can get some pretty dwarf varieties like tomthum and lady thumb. they also overwinter. the annual night phlox has ok foilage during the day and the flowers smell devine in the evening. for foliage how about the dark leaved heuchera and the new lime version? you could go for ferns too and although not strictly summer bedding the are some stunning species.

Hardy Geraniums will do. Not pelegoniums.
These will grow flower and then cut them in the summer and they will flower again.
