I have a long but narrow gap between railway sleepers in my garden and was thinking of making it an alpine area?Is a very drainned soil they like with grit for drainage?

Yes, a LOT grit. Don't buy from the garden centre, it is much too expensive. If you must buy it by the bagful go to a builders merchant for 6mm grit. I get it delivered direct from a local quarry and get two or three tonnes at a time - it does last me quite a while.

Yes spot on. Good drainage is essential.
