I put them in as deep as possible - aiming for at least 4 inches, more if I can.

I never know whether depths refer to the top of the bulb of the bottom.

Three times the depth of the bulb itself is one guide.

Trumpet, Large Cup, and Small Cup Daffodils need to be 4-6 inches deep at the shoulders--that's just below the neck, which can vary according to the grower's harvesting machinery. Other Narcissus should be around 3-4 inches deep at the shoulder. Mixed bulbs should have illustrations of the bulbs and directions of how deep on the bag, though Inverglen's rule of thumb mostly applies. Main exceptions: Tulips need to be planted deep, around 6-8 inches deep at the shoulder; and Bearded Iris need to be planted shallow, with the top of the rhizome (the roots are at the bottom) barely showing at the surface.

Whoa! Doubly assertive! The depths that I recommend may be because the soil is cooler in summer that deep here in the desert. I do have problems with summer rot and blind Daffs if I plant them more shallowly.
