I bought a dixsonia antartica 7 or 8 years ago. It has given fronds every year and I make sure it is protected in the winter. However this year, the fronds are not as long as they used to be. Should I give the tree some fertiliser? If yes, what sort? Many thanks. Francoise

No, don't feed it anything now. Some people drop a sugar solution into the top earlier in the year to help it along a bit, but feeding now is not a good idea. You may have had shorter fronds because of the cold winter last year, or because we've had such a mixed and rather poor summer, specially temperature wise, this year.
