Hi there,
I laid turf in May this year and all was lush until a couple of months ago when it looks like it is dying for some reason. I cut it last night but to maybe two inches high but as you see from the photo 50% looks dead. It sees to get greener the deeper it is as you can see from the unmown grass around the edge. What do you think I should do? Many thanks,

How long between when you cut it this time and the time before? Did it look green, like it does round the edge on the left, before you cut it this time?

I cut it about two weeks ago - I'm up in the highlands of scotland and it has been very wet all "summer". It hasn't been cut too short either but when it gets longer it does look greener many thanks.

Hi Mjmac, as Bamboo has asked, was the grass green before you cut it?

When I cut my lawn for the first time since it was laid in March it looked very brown afterwards - verdant green to brown. Regular mowing, watering and feeding has helped. Even though it has rained lots in the summer in Scotland, it came down in monsoon style, so you still need to water it. Have you watered it at?

I would try watering and some autumn feed and if that does not work in 2 weeks time then I would aerate and dethatch the lawn then add seed to help it along.

If its green when it gets longer, its not dead - the photo above has the look of grass which hasn't been cut for a while, or was over 6 inches long and was then cut down. This often means it looks brown because the long topgrowth has kept the light out from the lower part of the shoots of the grass.
Follow Kildermorie's advice if you're worried, but it isn't dead.

Thanks for the advice. I watered continuously for a month so the turf wouldn't dry out and it was verdant for a couple of months and I haven't allowed it to get too long before cutting. If you look closely about 50% is green and the same is dead throughout the whole lawn. I'm beginning to wonder if the farmer has sprayed something on the adjacent fields which may have targetted a particular variety of my grass make up - what do you think? Thanks everybody

Agree with bamboo. But i've always gone with the idea not to feed a newly laid lawn for the first year..

Thanks again - I will take kildermories advice as it is not a cutting issue - it is green when it is longer as the live grass has grown passed the dead stuff which becomes more visible after a cut. I'll have to reseed once I've raked out the dead. Many thanks for your comments.
