I have an abundance of pears this year, all from one tree. The problem is that the skins are very thick and they need to be peeled as it is impossible to bit in to them. Why is this and is there anything I can do to stop a recurrence next year.

I believe that pears ripen off the tree so you should leave them to soften up a bit. Provided you harvested them when they were ready to come off. I am not sure how long they take to ripen once picked but i suppose it would be when they feel soft.
