Is it possible to take cuttings from a bay tree.
If so what is the best way?

Yes, it is. Firstly, look at the base and see if there are any suckers - you may find some that have roots that you can pot up. The other way is to take semi-ripe cuttings, i.e. the softer shoots of the tree, which you should take now. They'll need high humidity to root successfully, so put a clear polythene bag 'tent' over the cuttings and mist them frequently. You could also layer a shoot in the spring if there's a suitable one.
