What plant/trees love really wet soil

Moved into a brand new house and the garden is always soaking wet. We have tried draining it and leaving plants in pots. We have had an apple tree which seemed to survive the 1st year but not looking so good

Oh there are lots - but as you are 'across the pond' - no pun intended! I think your best bet is to go to your Garden Centre and ask for plants that enjoy such conditions.
My inclination is to turn your garden into a bog garden and grow plants that will thrive there.
Can you get Cornus sibirica? That is one shrub which enjoys damp. Ligularia, Rodgersia, Lobelia cardinalis, Primula bulleyana, Primula denticulata, Gunnera (if you have space) - that's just a few to start you off.
Good luck.
