Daffodil bulbs need to be planted in soil... they will not grow just sitting in water!

Your amaryllis should have been left in the pot and kept dry during the summer. All you need to do now is to begin to water again. If you remembered to feed them regularly after flowering before their rest you should get new flower spikes but if you didn't feed it may take a couple of years to build up the bulbs again. Feeding with high potash is important as they do not really like repotting unless they are really overcrowded.

Umm, Steragram? True Amaryllis (A. belladonna) could be treated that way, but they bloom in late summer or early fall, and do poorly in pots, and are rarely forced for the holidays. "Dutch" Amaryllis (Hippeastrum hybrids) are tropical plants from Central America, and naturally grow through the warm to hot, wet summers, go dormant in the cool, dry winters, and bloom in spring. To grow them for the holidays, water and feed them, and let them grow leaves, in filtered to direct sun, spring to August. In August, stop watering, and when the leaves turn yellow and soft, cut them off, and store the plants dry in the pots, someplace cool, around 13º C to 18º C, for about 8 weeks. When you bring them back into normal room temperature, put them somewhere bright, water them once, and the flowering stems should start coming up. Once the buds start up, let the soil dry out to 1 cm deep between soakings.

This is strange, Tug. Mine are hippeastrums and nobody has told them to flower in summer. They start growing in the autumn, and need a dry dormant period in summer, just as I described. I have had the same plant or its offshoots for well over 20 years and it has always been the same. In the UK they are sold as winter flowering bulbs and are often given as Christmas gifts. Advice on gardening programmes here is usually to do go for summer dormancy. I will be interested to see if anyone else has anything to add.

I would agree with Steragram on this one Tugb. All the GCs have the bulbs for sale now with a view to them flowering around Christmas time.

Hmm--doesn't seem to work that way in the States! I'll need to do more research, though my own experience says otherwise.

I've got to admit, it's been a long time since I forced them. For the past 20 years, I have been growing them in the ground, and they show no sign of wanting to go dormant in the summer.

Well as Shireysurhio lives in the US perhaps she needs to follow Tugb's advice rather than ours from the UK? Be interesting to know what she does and if it works.
