I have just looked at Mossy's page and someone mentioned the elephants ear?? Does this have stems with white flowers on during the summer. I have something similar and left it out last winter?? Is there another name for it?

I think you're referring to Colocasia, elephant ears or African Mask? Someone in the USA that grows them told me that they do have fragrant flowers, I believe purple though, but as Kildermorie said, the name Elephant Ears could be given to other plants.

I think it is one of those names that a few plants have.
Colcasia is the plant most people would call Elephant's Ear - it does grow very large given the right conditions but does not flower as far as I know.
On saying that, in the UK Elephant's Ear is normally Bergenia, which has white/pink/red flowers). The leaves are not that big (compared to Colcasia) and are not Elephant ear shaped.
