high raised beds

Hi, really want to help my friend to build some raised beds on her allotment. She has poorly knees so needs them to be quite high to work comfortably on. Also they need to be cheap to build ! Has anyone done this already without being a carpenter ?! Thanks Sandra

hi sandy.
we have raised beds and they are not hard to build.
try and use pressure treated timber as this will last longer.
measure the area you want and try and build so you can get access to all of the soil without walking on the bed.we have 6 beds , so a 5 year crop rotation is used with a permanent runner bean bed.planning is important and when you have all the sizes worked out you maybe able to get the timber cut to size at the timber centre/ diy superstore.use 2x2 timber at the corners to make the joints and either nail or screw together.hope this helps..................steve

We have raised up beds, on legs. They're made from decking boards so will last for years. No backache with these. Check out my pics, I'm sure there's a few on there to show you. My hubby built them a couple of years ago and we've raised loads of veggies in them.

Sandy10 if you scroll down to the bottom of the page you will see a section called 'Gardening Encyclopedia' and beside that is a section called 'Tips'. Go into 'Tips' and you will see 'Building raised beds' and there you will find lots of photos with comments as well as blogs about this very topic - hope it's helpful.
