what is the optimum PH for growing roses and is it a good idea to lime if the soil is too acid

I do not think that Roses are that fussy over pH but prefer slightly acid soil. I would not use lime unless your soil is very acidic, like 5 or below.

What would benefit them best is a thick, light compost like John Innes 3 with some bone meal. Then mulch over winter.
