Have you got a photo? The leaves sound like a phaleanopsis.

It is a phalanopsis, I have 15 of them, they need very little water some peole suggest rainwater but mine survive on tap water. Just take the chill off the water and water it somewhere that will allow the water to run right through don't let it stand in the water, This time of the year twice a week as it is in flower. They survive quite happily on a window but out of direct sunlight. I've found that the website at www.easyorchids.co.uk have free information and very comprehensive details on how to look after the phalanopsis orchids. THey are so much better than cut flowers as they last for several months and will flower for years. Enjoy your orchid.

I feed mine once a fortnight with orchid food I dissolve in the watering can. I only water mine once a week and then only a little. Never let water stay in the pot as it rots the roots. Tip it out if you water it too much.
