Leigh, we have big bunches of mistletoe growing in the oak trees round here, but it isn't the same stuff you would get in the UK - it has lime green leaves and berries. The berries will all be gone before Christmas, so it isn't worth anyone picking them. Am I right in thinking the seeds have to have to have the fleshy fruits still around them when you squash them into the cracks in the bark of host trees? I haven't heard of mistletoe growing on acer, just oak and fruit trees. Let us know if you are successful.

hello jen i hope your well . thanx for that . basicly birds eat it and when it comes out the other end its very sticky so the birds have to wipe there bums on branches etc to get rid of them so the cycle continues so you do need the fruit part realy . i think theres actualy loads of mistletoe veriaties but im not sure . i know amy from goy has done this and hadf sucsess but it grows realy quiet slowly . i believe she has it on a fruit tree . i will get a few berries as i have a cherruy tree just incase you are write as the acer could be poisones to the mistletoe . thanks anyway take care lots of love leigh xx ps you sound young on the phone to .

Mistletoe grows best on apple, hawthorn, lime and poplar trees. Lots of good info on growing by copying and pasting th link below into your web browser:

The supermarkets and GCs will start to sell fresh mistletoe very soon. If a berry or two where to accidentally fall off in your hands when looking at the merchandise then it would be wasteful not to take them home and try growing it in your garden...it is rarely found wild in Norfolk, of at all.

Mistletoe berries are not ripe until February/March. Berries that "fall off" at Christmas are unlikely to germinate
13 Dec, 2011
Actually if they are white they are ripe Andrew. Wild Mistletoe berries are ripe from Oct-Dec. You might have green ones next to white ones on any given mistletoe but white ones are the ones to cut into tree branches - germination may take till spring though.

the thing is they take better if they are ripe or kept in the right way untill febuary from what i red .

If you were in Worcestershire, I could give you loads and loads and loads - this 'rare' mistletoe is extremely common here!!!

Oh, that's a shame, NP, I spent the afternoon walking round, picking up berries from our lime green variety (no leaves, just clouds of berries, but all the bunches far too high up the oaks to reach. I was going to fill a matchbox and send them to you!

It sounds as if you are about to receive lots of berries, Np. If you do I would suggest using soome straight away and keeping the rest until February - its not that far off anyway.
19 Dec, 2011
its worth a try bulbaholic they just dont take so well now and you have to keep the whole berry till feb . nothing to lose mate .
