I wouldn't have thought 4 or 5 plants to be sufficient. When you buy the plants from a garden centre, the labels usually have advice on how far apart to plant them. I know in the long run they can grow quite wide, but that's all down to pruning and I'm sure you'd rather a dense bush than a straggly one?

Nosey, I don't know how long a bamboo would take, I agree it would look good and wouldn't need trimming.
But I also wonder if privet wouldn't be good. It's flowers smell divine and it grows quickly, from my experience (the varigated one with yellow leaves) I'm sure it's also evergreen. And it is also a hit with wildlife.
