In winter (before end of december in mild weather south) cut out any of the old wood and reduce any new sprouts by half. Anything more serious after winter (ie late january onwards once sap starts rising) will lose a year's flowering and berrying. If your tree needs a serious reduction then you will have to 'bite the bullet' and 'see'. North yorkshire may well be okay to prune in January?
