We used to stack turf with the grass facing down into heaps which we used as the loam for home made compost, the fibre content is quite high and it is fairly weed free.

You could use "garrota" (sp.?) This is used to help breakdown stuff for the compost heap.
When I dug up my lawn (or should that be my hubby and son!! lol!) the grass was turned over so that none was showing. After a few weeks, it'll die and you'll then need to dig the soil over before putting any plants in its space.
If you really need to put the clumps in the compost heap, try knocking as much soil off as you can first and put lots of worms in the compost bin. Hope that helps?
