Orchid Identification please..
I bought this Orchid about three years ago, from a 'sale' corner at a GC,but no label..It only ever has approx six flowers per stem, every January..unlike my Phalenopsis, which blooms twice a year, and has up to 40 blooms in summer...I presume it is a different variety, but it would be nice to know which it is..thank you..

Thank you,Mg..I hadn't a clue,as it seems so different in it's growing habits..I do treat it the same as my other one..

It is a Phal. noid. (No i.d.) These easy to grow hybrids are sold in their thousands by supermarkets and g.cs. They are lovely and not expensive. They do tend to have different behaviour depending on their parentage because even within the 'purer' orchid species different varieties have different habits. You are right to treat them the same Bloomer. Nearly all phals respond well to comfortable temperatures lowish light levels i.e. you don't need grow lights and moderate watering, just don't let the roots stand in water or they will rot. I have several, all but one bought cheaply with no idea (at the time) of the colour or markings but we love them all. They are great for people who love orchids but can't be bothered with adjustable temperature/humidity/light level grow rooms. I sometimes wish I hadn't got the bug but at least the phals can just stay in the living room. Lol.

Thank you,Sarraceniac, that is interesting, and glad I'm doing the right thing..It is kept in a North facing window,in my lounge, alongside my white one..the only suitable window sill I have,so I haven't been tempted to buy more, much as I love them, like you....I have had the white one seven years now,and it is quite happy there..Shame the above doesn't have more blooms, but I like it anyway..:o)

The Phali. I have that looks like this doesn't have a lot of blooms either but they last a long while.

Mine lasts a long time too,Mg..so that's worth having, isn't it ? Do you find they take a long time to get to the flowering stage ? mine seems to take ages, from the buds forming.....'A watched kettle' comes to mind!

I just leave them in the back utility room until they get to the point of flowering - sorry! Basically like any house plant we have they are ignored... I'll go oops grab the inner pot and hold under the tap till the roots go green then forget about again for weeks… zzzz

Long as you don't let them stand in a non-draining cache-pot MG then it will be fine. One of my neighbours, who is quite a good gardener brought a dead orchid round to me last summer and asked if I could revive it. She had been bought it by her husband and had then proceeded to water it in situ, leaving it standing in tap water (clean rain water is actually better for all chids) and the roots were rotten, smelly, slimy and black. I told her to go to the supermarket and get a replacement and throw the cache-pot away or use it for a pelargonium this time. If she must have a pretty pot then she should put pebbles in the bottom to lift the roots out of any stagnant water.

No I don't let it stand in water, which is why I said I hold it under a running tap - our water in this part of Scotland is as soft as rainwater and has never bothered any of the indoor plants.
