I have been reading the answers about grubs in leeks, but mine are not described. I have little black hard things in my leeks which look rather like mouse droppings. They have burrowed into the outer layers of the leeks and seem to do little damage apart from the tracks going brown (and later possibly splitting and rotting). Any idea what they are and what I can do to prevent them next year?

That particular nasty is getting more prevalent in the UK and has been affecting onions, and lots of people in Shropshire where i live have been badly affected.
Not sure about the situation in America, but if yours are the same, it may be a good idea to send off a sample to whatever agricultural authority you have for proper identification.
Good luck.
