Is this normal........?

Norfolk, United Kingdom

I've put this lil' pond in (well, hubby acutually, lol!) and put some water plants in, including something which is supposed to eat algae. But do I need to buy some more? There seems to be quite a bit of algae on the surface? Thanks!

Hi Craftnutter,
You have provided such a nice little bath for algae to grow in - warm and lots of light. They will love it!

Craftnutter I'm not sure of the diameter of your pond but it looks to be very, very small... as Celandine says a perfect place for algae to grow. Only suggestion I can make is to move it to somewhere it will get less sunlight, even then I suspect you will have an algae problem.

Hmmm, this is difficult. I originally thought to put the pond in the shade where I know algae won't grow. But then the wildlife won't want to visit it. I plan on putting plants round the pond, but the soil is not ready for the new plants yet and the plants are still quite small.

I did remember last night too, that straw is supposed to clean up algae, so will pinch some from the rabbit's supplies!! Lol!!

Hmmm, will have to give this some more thought. I might also take out 2 stones, so wildlife will still be able to get out, but there'll be more water in it.

Thanks for your help!

Barley is for your fight against algae, try also watercress as it acts as a filter.
Use a piece of card to scrape off the scum from the top and put a small bunch of oxygenating plants in. A small water lillie will shade the water as it grows.
Algea love water in direct sun. A bit of dappled shade will suffice.

Ah, thanks Trees! That's really useful advice! I was quite surprised to find that the rain got rid of the algae, so I don't need to do anything at the moment.

I do have plants planned to go round the pond so it will get shade eventually but I'd love to get a small water lily. Will have to investigate the internet for one.......... (runs off...)
