I find begonia corms don't need to be in compost at all during the winter. I've kept them frost free in an empty seed tray over winter, then pressed them into the top of compost to start into growth in mid to late March.
Keep your fingers crossed Charlie, they may be OK

Hello, Charlie! You will have to wait and see if any of the root has survived ... You may not have lost them all! They are not frost hardy at all, and prefer overwintering in a frost free environment in dry compost, before being replanted out in about May time.
