Erysimum Bowles Mauve....I bought one last week, and wondering if I should keep it in the pot for a while before planting out,please..I have it outside in the day,but under cover at night..it has lots of buds, and not sure if it is fully hardy..
It was under cover when I bought it.Your advice would be helpful, thank you..

I'd keep it a bit sheltered for now - the weather's set to turn cold again over the weekend. Mine's been planted since last year - it was doing fine, until this latest cold spell and it now looks very sorry for itself indeed.

I took cuttings late last year - one is doing great, the other dried out a bit, hopefully it will recover. They're still under glass outside in a sheltered spot though.

I will probably take cuttings too...is that the best time to take them ?

No, its earlier really, should be in summer rather than autumn - 6 inch semi ripe cuttings with a heel, preferably, inserted into a sandy medium and kept in a cold frame till the following year. I just gave it a shot because I'd not got round to doing it - took 6, 2 rooted.

mine are very hardy 'up North' and is still throwing the odd flower up even with the snow we have just had. Find they tend to be short lived 3-4 yrs but as bamboo says easy to cuttings of.

sashing plant. but I'd wait to plant it out as the soil will be very cold.

That's good you still have yours,Sbg..I read they were quite short lived,so cuttings it will be...but as it was only £2 from M.......ns..I think I might be able to push the boat out,and buy another..if need be :o)

but think of the satisfaction of keeping it going for over 20yrs :o) The plant is now in several family & friends garden up and down the country. its what they call a 'good do-er'.

That is a lovely thought,Sbg..I will do my best..:o)

Seaburngirl is right, they are frost hardy, but usually only down to -5C for one or two nights. A new plant needs to be acclimatised before planting out, as Bamboo says. At £2 from Morrisons, bloomer, ... well worth the buy without the hassle of propagating a new plant!!
