Hi, celandine, is it fatal?

West Midlands, United Kingdom Gb

My garden is overrun by celandine which has killed off a lot of my lovely spring flowers, forget me nots and honesty etc which were a delight in spring. I've tried digging them out which only made matters worse and I suspect some must have found their way to the compost heap as they're everywhere now. Before I resort to chemicals, is there anything I can do? I am not in the first flush of youth, or to be honest the second or third.

Oh no this herb is so healing for some reason you need it in your body. Pick dry the plant use as tea....Truly everything that grows in our garden we need for some reason. You can make salves from this plan use it in teas. Oh my Make raised beds and you can being new areas with fresh soil. I love the bright yellow this plant is and you can use the blosem for dys. Bornagain not sure what you mean by 'fatal' but once you've got it, it is certainly difficult to get rid of! Whilst Lujean may sing its praises I would certainly be declaring war if it tried to take over our garden. Chemicals wont help, as they will kill your other plants, digging and removing the little thread roots is the only answer and DON'T put them in your compost - it is unlikely to get hot enough to kill them off!

Hi, thanks for your reply Lujean. I'm sure there are a lot of things I could use this plant for but it has killed all my lovely spring flowers and is absolutely everywhere. Moongrower, thanks also but it was my attempt at digging it out that helped spread it and I have a suspicion that my husband put some in the compost! The problem is the little bulblet things which break off if you so much as breathe on them. I thought I might try that weed killer which is neutralised or something on contact with the soil. Next spring as soon as they show their little leaves above the parapet I could whack them. The only problem is I am loath to use chemicals. has anyone any experience of this type of weed killer? I have dogs and grandchildren and wildlife to consider. Any advice appreciated.

They have to be dug out complete with their tiny little brown tuber. I tear the leaves off and compost them and put roots/tubers into the council bin for composting. this is done to a higher temperature than i can get.
I resorted to 'spraying' with roundup as their leaves were almost over ie now. The poison is then translocated to the roots and tubers and they then died. I did this in a small area first to see if it was a success. and yes it was. I have used cotton gloves over rubber gloves and rubbed my hands 'lovingly' over the leaves. this prevented over spray to plants that i want to keep. i put it on in the evening when most insects etc are 'in bed' and my own children are in for the night.

Thanks Seaburngirl, I'll give it a try. That's a brilliant tip, cotton gloves over rubber. I'll probably not attempt those touching plants but I'll whack any that aren't. Have you any tips for pleioblastus auricoma (short variegated golden bamboo) I only have a small garden and was told it didn't spread like other bamboos ha! Do you think the roundup would work on it? I tried digging it up but roots had gone under my little self laid patio which started to come up at the edge! Would just spraying the main area, where it was originally planted, take enough down to the rhizomes to kill it all as it's growing through a couple of nice shrubs now as well? From now on I'm going to become a ruthless gardener, if it's in the wrong place, up it comes immediately and no more impulse buying!

sorry didnt see the follow up q. yes it should work on the bamboo as long as it is on the leaves not on the woody stems.

Thanks, ever since I bought the roundup it's rained, typical. By the way, I'm not sure what Lujean was implying, but now I know that celandines other name is pilewort! 'cos it's used to treat piles! I've enough to treat the whole street with the damned things.
