I have just bought a standard patio cherry tree. What size pot is best to plant it in & what is best compost to use. Do I also need to put gravel at bottom of pot

J-cloth over the bottom will also help to keep ants etc. out

Thanks for the clever tip Moon Growe. Will most def put that to good use with all my pots as I get innundated with ants in the Summer. Will pass the tip on to friends & family. Cheers

Best compost would be John Innes No. 2 or 3 or a mix of the two. No you don't need gravel in the pot - but you do need holes in the bottom of the pot, and something to raise it slightly off the slabs or patio to discourage ants, etc. Choose a pot which will allow you to spread out the roots (assuming it's bare root currently) without cramping, and with enough space for further growth. Minimum size probably 12 inches deep by 12 inches wide.
