I am about to purchase some Gardenia Kleims hardy, I managed to find some supplied in 3 litre pots and not the usual 9cm pots after lots of searching on the web. I live in Bristol and I was wondering when would be the best time to plant it and also would it be best in a pot or direct into the border. Also if any knows where I could buy a larger one would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Reckon to be hardy down to -10C but I would grow them in a sheltered, sunny spot, slightly acid to neutral soil. Buy in 3 litre pot but be prepared to harden it off as it most likely to have come out of a heated glasshouse. Still be prepared to give winter protection. Good scented flowers, long flowering period.

I've got one of these, had it just over 2 years, given to me as a small plant about 3 inches high. I've kept mine in a pot because I didn't know how it would perform, and I'll admit I neglected it a bit. All I can say is, it's a very slow grower (although my neglect won't have helped), seems to prefer non alkaline soil, has certainly been hardy, it came through 2 snowy winters. However, it is on a southfacing balcony, so obviously fairly sheltered. The flowers are absolutely stunning - there's a photo of mine in flower in my Photos, on the first page, 4 pic. I can't remember if the flowers were fragrant though.

No experience of this myself but from memory im sure this had unfavourable comments about its hardyness and flowering ability a while back.
