Are there any tree ferns which are tolerant or alkali soil and which would grow in a north facing part shady garden?

Dicksonia antartica does prefer a slightly acid soil, but will grow quite well in almost any soil - provided its enriched beforehand, and has enrichment via composted materials added frequently around it. Choose a spot which is reasonably shady, preferably dappled shade, so being shaded by the canopy of broadleaved trees is ideal, provided you don't plant too close to the trunks. Dig over the area where you want to plant it, incorporating ericaceous compost, plus soil conditioning compost or well rotted garden compost. Bark chips placed around the plant on top of the soil will help too.
