Which shrubs will grow well in a shady position. I also need some ground cover for the same area.
Happy day

Mahonia, viburnum tinus, euonymus fortunii - one of the gold variegated ones such as emerald 'n gold, holly. Ground cover try perennial geraniums. Not all are shade lovers but look on Long Acre plants website under G. A clump of bergenia, foxgloves, liriope, epidedium, hosta, heucherella. vinca. To brighten the edge of the bed in summer try fibrous rooted begonias - only annual but cheerful all summer whatever the weather.

At the risk of sounding like a cracked record, and offending Steragram as well, PLEASE think twice about vinca - it's the biggest garden thug ever, along with equisetum and ground elder, and the bane of my life.

It doesn't offend me at all - Iwouldn't have it either, but it is good ground cover for shade you have to admit! Come on Gattina, it isn't as bad as equisetum though!

In this garden it is, and I have both! The vinca has invaded my lawn and has grown underneath the rocks in the rockery, about 18" down, to the point where the roots are actually growing INTO fissures in the mountain! I can use a flamethrower on the equisetum!
