Can I use any sharp sand mombined with grit to help drainage in a border. Or is it a special sharp sand?

I wouldn't bother with the sand at all if you're using sharp horticultural grit - substitute the sand with plenty of humus rich material such as well rotted animal compost or soil conditioning compost or your own garden compost. Add humus rich material as often as possible.
