Daphnes prefer a well drained, humus rich soil, preferably alkaline to neutral rather than acid. Sun or partial shade.

I grew one from a berry and it was in bog standard commercial compost. after 5 years it finally made it into the garden. My soil is chalky/alkaline and the Daphne is in partial shade. Its doing very well at the moment.
