Indian bean tree dead?
United Kingdom
I have a newly planted bean tree in my garden, I think 2 years ago this May. But, it hasn't exactly thrived!! We chose it for it's quick growth providing a shady canopy for our garden. But this year I can;t even see any budding leaves and the branches haven't really grown at all, I'm worried it's actually dead!

You have not said where you live, as this is a fairly tender tree, it is quite possible with the very harsh winter we had your tree may have been killed they like to be sheltered, my daughter has one in her garden which does not look too healthy either, and we live down South, good luck with the scratch test.

I have one, it is about 4 yrs old and about 3 feet tall. It usually looks dead once the leaves have fallen. I look at it all the time especially more in the spring for sign of life. Sure enough buds are begining to form on it. It is slow to grow and take a while to flower. Mine has not flowered as yet, but the leaves has not failed me yet.

After answering your question, I decided to go online, this tree is apparently hardy, but does not like cold winds, as to soil very conflicting opinions there. I have been looking to buy one as I love the beautiful coloured leaves, so I have ordered one from Parkers. Do let me know whether your tree survived?

Do the scratch test on it - scrape a small piece of bark (half an inch at most) and see if the wood is greenish - if it is, it's still alive. If the wood is brown, I'm afraid your tree is probably dead.
Leave it in for a while in case it sprouts out again - I hope it does!
