Hey!

Can you plant the brussel sprout that you've been soaking?

Answers

First, let me just say that I'm assuming your 'hey' means hello, rather than the English interpretation - over here, hey is usually shouted out loud in a fairly angry or startled fashion, lol! Second, what brussel sprout are you talking about and third, soaking in what? And why?

Brussels sprouts are a brassica why are you soaking the seed? Or are you soaking an actual sprout for some reason? Please amplify your question. Oh and to add to Bamboo's comment in the UK 'hey' is usually followed up with 'you' 'hey you' and then generally something derogatory.

I would also like a little more explanation of the question, Jon. Brussels sprout, to me, is a tall, leafy vegetable and you eat the sprouts that grow up the side of the stem. There is no part of the vegetable or the seed that I would soak.

would this be bean sprout rather than brussel ?

Until Jon replies we've no way of knowing!

Here in the States, "Hey!" is considered a friendly greeting--sometimes slightly overly friendly and familiar--often used by the young and the colloquial, so insult or conrontation was probably not intended. : )
I'll admit that the question mystified me, also.

I guessed it wasn't intended as a shout, Tugbrethil - I've watched enough American tv to know that the expression appears to be a replacement, particularly by the young, for hello or hi, lol!

Thank you all for your comments and questions! Especially to you Moon growe for correcting my English, and to you Tugbrethil for the accurate portrayal of my position as a young, curious, gardener.

In my defense, I thought that my question was going to be posted beneath a picture of a soaking brussel sprout that was posted here:http://www.growsonyou.com/gardening/slideshow/brassicas/60050. The image basically shows a brussel sprout, on top of a glass jar full of water, with little root tendrils shooting into the water, from the bottom of the sprout. Can I expect a new brussel plant from this sprout?

Also, while I'm on the subject of sprouts. I'm house sitting for a couple who left a head of purple cabbage in a plastic bag in the fridge for about three months. I recently noticed that it was starting to grow roots, and so I cut of an eighth of the head, with roots still intact, and put them some potting soil. It's been about two weeks, and there are at least five healthy looking sprouts shooting out of the core. Can I transplant these, and expect more cabbage?

The sprouting Brussels sprout could well produce a new plant, and sprouts in its turn, if your summer is mild enough. Before planting it outside, though, you will probably have to harden it off, by gradually getting it used to the brilliant sun and chilly nights of the great outdoors.
I would expect leaves and flowers out of the partial cabbage head, but probably not a head. By the way, what you have done with the cabbage is what professional cabbage breeders do to get heads to evaluate, and still get the plants to live on and produce seed for future generations!

I haven't a clue what the answer might be to your question now you've explained the situation, Jonbegin - I leave it to the veggie growers amongst us!

Thanks so much for the information about my sprouts. I appreciate the input, and its reassuring to know that I can have my gardening questions answered by a knowledgeable group of people.

Hi Jon

Apologies for the lateness of this comment been away on holiday. I would be doubtful myself of getting a decent plant from a Brussel's sprout you have sat on top of water but there is only one way to find out... try it and let us know what happens. In the mean time you might want to start growing some from seed too.

Oh and Glaswegian Scots, which I am not, 'Hey you' everyone but not in a polite way :-)

How do I say thanks?
