I have been given a Hamamelis 'Arnold Promise'. Can I grow this in a container? If so, what size should I choose? Should I put it in its final size container, or move it periodically. My garden soil is sandy and free draining, and I understand this plant needs an acid soil.

It doesn't need acid soil - it doesn't like alkaline conditions, that's true, but it grows well on neutral soil, and on sandy soil, because it likes a free draining situation. This is a large shrub, reaching eventually about 4 m high and wide, and wouldn't make a good pot subject, because it also doesn't like root disturbance.
Choose your spot carefully, given its eventual height and spread - once its in, you don't really want to have to move it again. Keep it well watered during dry spells though.
