Maybe one of the smaller species of butterwort (Pinguicula)?

there are some nice variegated plants called Acoris, they will grow happily in the water or in the damp soil behind.

The thing that you say is like a butter cup may be a marsh marigold

I'm not sure if you're looking for plants that will grow in very wet conditions or just small plants to grow in normalo ground around the pond
Astilbes will grow happily in very wet ground but will also cope well with dryer ground.
Hostas look lovely next to a pond.
