Has anyone tried the multi-purpose compost from Homebase and if so is it OK please ? Or can anyone advise me of some that is very good and too full of "rubbish" ?

Which one? There is a peat free one that dries out quickly, but makes a great mulch/soil improver. The general purpose one is good - I use it all the time as the 4 for 3 offer gives you loads of compost to work with. I recommend both.

Thank you both very much - there is just so much rubbish about these days.

I have not used the Homebase compost. The latest one that I bought is 'New Horizon', recommended by Which magazine and Garden Organic. I find it to be very pleasant to use with no large lumps of rubbish. I will definitely buy it again.
